Chapter 17

Something wasn’t right. Brentin didn’t know what it was, but ever since he’d finished filming Ms. Sabey’s interview and had left to get ready for the ball—ever since he’d left Mikaela with Andrew—he’d felt like someone had dropped a heavy block of lead on top of him, and no matter how much he tried, he couldn’t focus solely on his filming. Part of it, however, he could have blamed on the frustration—envy—he felt every time Mikaela’s attention had turned to Andrew rather than to him. And there was nothing he could do about it until he’d cleared things up with Amiria. But the other part? Why the prickles that moved like a long, rough-scaled snake across the back of his neck?

The first haunting notes of “May It Be” by Enya from The Fellowship of the Ring’s soundtrack filled the room. Brentin, dressed as Thorin, the Dwarf prince from The Hobbit movies, led Amiria, dressed as Eowan, a shield maiden, from the crowded theater in the middle of the convention center to the mezzanine. Vendors with themed knickknack booths filled the room and foyer. Yesterday they’d sold DVDs, statuettes, and other collectibles. This evening they also sold pictures, books, and costumes from the movies. All due, Brentin assumed, to the visiting celebrities who’d held speaking events and photo shoots earlier that day.

“Stay close,” Brentin told Amiria. “I don’t want to lose you in this crowd.”

“I don’t want to get lost.” She slid her hand around the crook of his elbow just above his leather arm bracers, but something in her touch felt different than usual. Territorial? He glanced down at her. Her regal white costume shimmered so brilliantly she couldn’t help but stand out from the other women in the room.

“I love your Dwarf costume,” she went on. “Did I tell you that already? It makes you look so, I don’t know, ruggedly exotic and exciting.”

Despite himself, Brentin’s cheeks warmed. His next oldest sister had told him something of the same thing back in Colorado when she’d first handed him his fur-and-leather coat. She’d said his costume fit over his muscles like a tight layer of skin, that no girl would be able to resist him when he wore it. He’d wanted to believe her but had convinced himself it was only sisterly flattery. But now . . . would his costume have attracted Mikaela? “Thanks.”

“It’s true, you know.” The smile in Amiria’s voice pulled his gaze back to hers. Her eyes shone with softness. Brentin looked quickly away. He had to stop this. Now. It simply wasn’t fair to either of them to let her go on thinking he felt more for her than friendship. He scanned the room. But where—and how—could he tell her?

“Hello, Mr. Williams.” The feminine voice with the British accent belonged to the tall, thirty-something energetic redhead who’d helped Ms. Sabey get the convention on its feet. He couldn’t remember her name, but he’d heard rumors that she intended to head up another conference next year in her home country of England.
